Thousands Evacuate as Floods Devastate Australia

Heavy rainfall has triggered flooding in parts of northern Queensland.

A woman has died in Australia, and thousands have been forced to evacuate after torrential rainfall triggered severe flooding in northern Queensland.

Authorities have warned that floodwaters could reach second-storey levels, describing the situation as dangerous and life-threatening.

More than 700mm (26in) of rain has fallen in parts of North Queensland over the past 24 hours, with concerns that "record rainfalls" will continue into Monday, according to Queensland State Premier David Crisafulli.

Meteorologists predict these could be the worst floods the region has seen in over 60 years.

Crisafulli stated that conditions were unlike anything northern Queensland had experienced "for a long time."

"It's not just the intensity, but also the longevity of it," he told Australian broadcaster ABC.

In the city of Townsville, thousands of residents were ordered to evacuate by midday on Sunday, while authorities deployed 100,000 sandbags to hold back floodwaters.

Flooding has also cut off parts of the road between Townsville and the tourist hub of Cairns, complicating efforts to deploy rescue teams and deliver sandbags to affected areas.
