Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is reportedly planning to step down as leader of the Liberal Party following increasing pressure. Calls for his resignation have intensified since December, after Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland—one of Trudeau’s closest cabinet allies—resigned, citing disagreements over his proposals for increased spending.
Trudeau, who has led the Liberal Party since 2013 and served as prime minister since 2015, has faced mounting public frustration in recent years due to a worsening housing crisis and affordability issues.
His anticipated departure leaves the Liberals in a challenging position, as they must quickly select a new leader while facing unfavorable polls. Current projections indicate the party is poised to lose decisively to the opposition Conservatives in the federal election, which is required by late October.
