Chargers Rally to Defeat Broncos 34-27, Boost Playoff Odds to 97%

The Los Angeles Chargers staged a dramatic comeback, scoring three second-half touchdowns to erase a double-digit deficit and defeat their AFC West rivals, the Denver Broncos, 34-27 on Thursday night at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

With the win, the Chargers improved their playoff chances to 97%, according to NFL.com. They can officially secure a postseason spot if the Miami Dolphins and Indianapolis Colts both lose on Sunday.

Quarterback Justin Herbert led the charge, completing 23 of 31 passes for 284 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Running back Gus Edwards contributed significantly to the victory, rushing for 68 yards and scoring two touchdowns.

"Total Team Effort": Chargers Rally for Victory Behind Historic Play

“Just a total team effort by everybody: defense, offense, special teams,” Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh said after the game. “The test and challenge is how you are going to respond. They went back to work and stayed the course.”

Facing a 21-10 deficit in the second quarter, the Chargers began their remarkable comeback with a play not seen in nearly five decades.

Kicker Cameron Dicker nailed a 57-yard fair catch field goal as time expired in the first half, cutting the Broncos' lead to 21-13 heading into halftime. This rare feat, the first of its kind in 48 years, set the tone for the Chargers' second-half surge.

Chargers Use Rare Rule to Spark Comeback Victory

According to the NFL, if the kicking team interferes with a receiver who has signaled for a fair catch, the receiving team can extend the period by attempting a fair catch kick or a snap from scrimmage after penalties are enforced.

On the preceding play, Chargers punt returner Derius Davis was interfered with after calling for a fair catch, leading to a 15-yard fair catch interference penalty. Los Angeles opted for a rare free-kick field goal, setting up kicker Cameron Dicker for a 57-yard attempt.

“It’s my favorite rule in football,” head coach Jim Harbaugh said. “I’ve been trying to get one of those every game. It’s the first one we’ve made—we tried one with the 49ers; it was like a 70-yarder or something. It is my favorite rule, and Cam Dicker stepped up and nailed it. I thought it was a huge momentum shift going into halftime.”

The Chargers carried that momentum into the second half. After the Broncos extended their lead with a field goal, Justin Herbert orchestrated a 10-play, 70-yard drive, capped by Gus Edwards’ five-yard touchdown run. The extra point trimmed the deficit to 24-19.

Early in the fourth quarter, Herbert gave the Chargers their first lead of the game, connecting with Derius Davis on a 19-yard touchdown pass to put Los Angeles ahead 27-24. The Chargers never looked back, completing a thrilling comeback victory.

Herbert's 34-Yard Touchdown Secures Chargers' 34-24 Win Over Broncos

A 34-yard touchdown pass from Justin Herbert to Hassan Haskins with just under two-and-a-half minutes remaining extended the Chargers' lead to 34-24, and Los Angeles held on for the victory.

The loss significantly impacted Denver’s playoff chances, dropping their odds to 85%. The Broncos now face tough challenges to close the regular season, with games against the Cincinnati Bengals (6-8) and Kansas City Chiefs (13-1) looming.

“Obviously, a disappointing loss,” Broncos head coach Sean Payton said after the game. “It was disappointing because there was a lot at stake. We got off to a fast start, and I was encouraged by that, but uncharacteristically we didn’t finish, and we didn’t play nearly well enough in the second half—both offensively and defensively.”

“Credit to Los Angeles for fighting their way back in, and we didn’t make enough plays in the end.”
