Russia's defense ministry stated that this morning’s air strikes on Kyiv were a direct retaliation for a previous attack by Ukraine on its southern Rostov region.
The ministry claimed that Kyiv launched six U.S.-made long-range ATACMS missiles and four British-made Storm Shadow missiles at Rostov on Wednesday.
In response, Moscow said it carried out strikes on multiple military targets in the Ukrainian capital, noting that "all objects" had been successfully hit.
In Pictures: People Seek Shelter at Kyiv Station
Earlier today, residents in Kyiv sought shelter at a train station as air raid sirens echoed throughout the capital.
As reported earlier, a Russian missile strike killed at least one person and caused significant damage to a historic cathedral, six embassies, and other buildings in the Ukrainian capital during the morning rush hour.
Ukraine's air defenses successfully intercepted all five ballistic missiles launched by Russian forces against the capital, according to the air force.
Russia has been intensifying airstrikes on Kyiv and other targets, particularly energy infrastructure, as its forces make advances in the eastern Donbas region.
Foreign Ministry: Six Embassies Damaged in 'Barbaric' Kyiv Attack
Ukraine's foreign ministry has confirmed that six embassies were damaged in Russia's missile attack on Kyiv this morning.
The missiles struck the capital at 7 a.m. (5 a.m. UK time), killing one person and injuring 12, according to local authorities.
The embassies of Albania, Argentina, Palestine, North Macedonia, Portugal, and Montenegro were located in a building that sustained heavy damage from the Russian strike.
"Windows, doors, and the ceiling have been damaged at the embassies. This is an absolutely barbaric attack by Russia on diplomatic institutions," said spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi.
No casualties among diplomatic staff were reported.
