Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan is out of danger, police confirmed on Thursday, following stab wounds sustained during a scuffle with an intruder at his Mumbai home. The 54-year-old actor, who is currently undergoing surgery, was injured during the attempted burglary.

Khan, one of India’s most successful film stars, is the son of former cricket captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi and actress Sharmila Tagore.

“He is being treated and is out of danger,” senior police officer Gedam Dixit told Reuters.

Earlier, Niraj Uttamani, a hospital official, confirmed that Khan was undergoing surgery. “The extent of the damage will be understood once the surgery is complete,” he said, adding that a small foreign object had been found near Khan’s spine. Uttamani, the chief operating officer of the hospital, noted that Khan was admitted at around 3:30 a.m.

Khan, who has appeared in over 70 films and TV series, lives in an apartment in the Bandra area of Mumbai with his wife, actress Kareena Kapoor Khan, and their two children.

Representatives for Kareena Kapoor Khan confirmed that Saif Ali Khan was in surgery following the break-in attempt, adding that the rest of the family was unharmed.

Police also reported that a female employee at the home was attacked and is receiving treatment. Investigations are underway, and a search for the assailant has been launched.

The incident has sparked calls for increased security measures in Mumbai, with film industry figures and opposition leaders voicing concerns.

Clyde Crasto, spokesperson for the Nationalist Congress Party, questioned on X, “If high-profile individuals with security can be attacked in their homes, what could happen to ordinary citizens?”

Actor and filmmaker Pooja Bhatt also urged for more police presence in the suburb, which is home to many in the film industry.

“The city, and especially the queen of the suburbs, have never felt so unsafe before,” Bhatt posted on X, referring to Bandra's popular nickname.
