Texans score 2 points on a blocked extra-point return against the Chargers, marking a first in NFL playoff history.

HOUSTON (AP) — In a historic moment for the NFL playoffs, Houston’s D’Angelo Ross returned a blocked extra point for two points during the Texans’ wild-card victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday. This marked the first time such a play occurred in postseason history.

The pivotal play unfolded in the fourth quarter, shortly after Ladd McConkey scored on an 86-yard touchdown reception. On the ensuing extra-point attempt, Denico Autry blocked Cameron Dicker’s kick. The ball soared into the air before Dicker attempted to bat it down, but it slipped through his hands. Ross seized the opportunity, grabbing the ball and sprinting to the end zone, extending Houston’s lead to 25-12. The Texans ultimately secured a 32-12 victory—the first NFL game to conclude with that final score.

Texans coach DeMeco Ryans admitted he initially wasn’t focused on the extra point after McConkey’s long touchdown.

“I wasn’t really paying attention until I heard the big thump, and then we got it,” Ryans said. “I just saw (Ross) pick the ball up and head my way. I couldn’t help but smile.”

Since 2015, the NFL has awarded two points for defensive returns of failed extra-point attempts. Previously, such plays resulted in dead balls.
