Victims of the New Year's Day Attack in New Orleans
At least 15 people lost their lives in the tragic New Year's Day attack in New Orleans. Among them were a former American football player, an aspiring nurse, and a devoted parent. Families and loved ones have begun sharing their stories, even as authorities complete post-mortem examinations.
Martin "Tiger" Bech
Martin Bech, a former Princeton University football player, was among the victims. Princeton confirmed his death, with Coach Bob Surace describing him as a "Tiger" in every sense: a fierce competitor, a beloved teammate, and a caring friend. Bech was part of Princeton's 2016 and 2018 Ivy League Championship teams.
His brother, Jack Bech, paid tribute on X (formerly Twitter), saying, "I love you always, brother! You inspire me every day. Now you get to be with me in every moment."
Nikyra Cheyenne Dedeaux
Nikyra, just 18 years old, was an aspiring nurse. Her mother, Melissa Dedeaux, confirmed her death with a heartfelt plea for prayers on social media, sharing a photo of her daughter in her red graduation cap and gown. Nikyra had plans to start nursing training later this month but tragically lost her life after sneaking out with a cousin and a friend, both of whom survived.
Reggie Hunter
Reggie Hunter, a 37-year-old store manager and father of two, was also killed. His cousin, Shirell Robinson Jackson, described him as "full of life." Reggie had messaged his family to wish them a Happy New Year just minutes before the attack.
Nicole Perez
Nicole Perez, 27, worked at a deli and was described by her boss, Kimberly Usher Fall, as dedicated, smart, and kind-hearted. Nicole was the mother of a four-year-old boy, leaving behind a young child.
Matthew Tenedorio
Matthew Tenedorio, a 25-year-old audio-visual technician, was remembered for his "laid-back spirit and infectious laughter" in a family fundraiser. His mother, Cathy Tenedorio, shared a bittersweet memory of hugging and kissing her son for the last time at 9:00 PM on New Year's Eve.
These victims represent only a part of the heartbreaking loss experienced during the attack, and their families continue to grieve while honoring their lives and legacies.
