Director Jeff Baena's Cause of Death Revealed

Los Angeles authorities have disclosed further details regarding the death of Jeff Baena, the filmmaker and husband of actress Aubrey Plaza.

More details have emerged regarding the death of filmmaker Jeff Baena, husband of actress Aubrey Plaza.


The 47-year-old screenwriter and director died by suicide, as confirmed by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office. Baena was discovered deceased at a residence in Los Angeles on January 3, 2025.

A graduate of New York University's film program, Baena was widely recognized for his work in independent cinema. He collaborated frequently with Plaza, directing her in films such as Life After Beth—his directorial debut in 2014—Joshy, The Little Hours, and Spin Me Round. Baena also co-wrote the 2004 comedy I Heart Huckabees alongside director David O. Russell.


Baena and Plaza met in 2011 and married in 2020, though the couple kept their union largely private. Plaza publicly confirmed their marriage in 2021 while promoting Spin Me Round, in which they both worked.


"So proud of my darling husband @jeffbaena," Plaza shared on Instagram in May 2021, "for dreaming up another film that takes us to Italia to cause some more trouble."


Baena's death has left the film community and his loved ones in mourning. His family has requested privacy during this difficult time.
