Russia Claims Capture of Frontline Town Kurakhove in Eastern Ukraine
Russia has announced that its forces have captured the frontline town of Kurakhove in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine.
Kurakhove, which has been a focal point of Russian advances in recent months, is strategically significant as it serves as a stepping-stone toward the critical logistical hub of Pokrovsk, located 35 km (21 miles) to the north.
Ukraine has not confirmed the fall of Kurakhove. According to Viktor Trehubov, spokesperson for Ukraine's Khortytsia group of forces, Ukrainian troops were still engaged in combat with Russian forces in Kurakhove as of Monday morning.
An image shared on social media, reportedly showing a soldier raising a Russian flag in Kurakhove, was provided by Reuters but remains unverified by the BBC.
Kurakhove is connected to Pokrovsk via key supply routes critical for moving troops and equipment along the front line. Military analyst Roman Pohorily noted that capturing Kurakhove would give Russian forces the ability to mount an offensive on Pokrovsk from a new direction.
In addition, Russia's defense ministry claimed on Monday that its forces had taken control of the village of Dachenske, approximately 8 km south of Pokrovsk.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has launched a counter-attack in Russia’s Kursk region, leading to intense fighting in recent days.
Ukrainian forces have reportedly faced manpower challenges and have been losing territory in eastern Ukraine as Russian troops continue their advance.
