A Tesla Cybertruck that exploded Wednesday in Las Vegas was rented through Turo, the same car-sharing app used to rent the pickup truck involved in the New Orleans attack, Las Vegas police reported.
"I'm being told that the New Orleans vehicle was rented through Turo, and so was ours," Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill stated during a press conference. "This is another coincidence that our investigation must thoroughly examine."
Turo, a car-sharing platform similar to Airbnb but for vehicles, allows private car owners to rent out their vehicles.
In a statement to Business Insider, Turo confirmed the New Orleans truck was rented through its service. "We are heartbroken to learn that one of our host's vehicles was involved in this awful incident," the statement read. "We are actively partnering with the FBI. At the time of the reservation, we were unaware of anything in this guest's background that would have identified him as a trust and safety risk."
Turo did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment regarding the Las Vegas Cybertruck.
The San Francisco-based company operates in the U.S., U.K., Australia, Canada, and France, offering cars ranging from Toyotas and Jeeps to luxury brands like Porsches and Teslas. It has attracted investments from major firms, including American Express Ventures, BMW’s venture arm, and Kleiner Perkins, as well as celebrity investors like rapper 2 Chainz and professional athletes.
In 2020, Turo was valued at $1.5 billion, per PitchBook, and registered for an IPO in 2021, though it has not yet gone public. By March 2024, the platform hosted 360,000 listed vehicles.
During a Wednesday press conference, President Joe Biden said authorities were investigating potential links between the Las Vegas explosion and the New Orleans attack.
Sheriff McMahill confirmed that the Las Vegas explosion, which occurred outside the Trump International Hotel, killed the driver of the Cybertruck and injured seven others.
