WATCH: Donald and Melania Trump pay their respects at Jimmy Carter’s casket in the U.S. Capitol

As the United States bids farewell to former President Jimmy Carter, a continuous livestream of public memorial events honors the 39th president. These events celebrate his life, legacy as a humanitarian and statesman, contributions to public health, and the meticulous planning behind presidential funerals.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump, who has alternated between praising and mocking Jimmy Carter, visited the Capitol Rotunda on Wednesday to pay his respects as the 39th president lay in state ahead of Thursday's funeral in Washington, D.C.

The event, streamed live above, captured a solemn Trump, accompanied by his wife, Melania, as they paused in front of Carter’s flag-draped casket, placed on the Lincoln catafalque and guarded by a military honor detail. This marked a moment of reflection for Trump, who had recently renewed criticism of Carter’s decision to return control of the Panama Canal to its home country during his presidency.

Trump’s visit coincided with meetings with Republican senators on Capitol Hill, briefly halting the flow of citizens waiting in long lines to pay their respects. The Rotunda also saw notable visitors, including members of Congress, staffers, and former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Luci Baines Johnson, daughter of President Lyndon Johnson, paid a poignant tribute, blowing a kiss to the casket.

Jimmy Carter, the longest-lived U.S. president, passed away on December 29 at the age of 100. A naval officer, peanut farmer, and political outsider, Carter’s presidency from 1977 to 1981 was marked by challenges but later reevaluated favorably by historians. His post-presidency humanitarian work, including advocacy for global health and housing, solidified his legacy.

Attendees shared personal stories reflecting Carter's impact. Lyn Leverett, enduring freezing temperatures, described Carter as a symbol of decency. Susan Prolman recalled Carter’s 1976 campaign stop at her childhood home in New Hampshire, while others reflected on his character and service.

The contrast between Carter’s legacy and today’s political climate was a recurring theme. Margaret Fitzpatrick highlighted his reputation for honesty and integrity, while Kim James admired his lifelong commitment to helping others.

The ceremonies this week have also recognized Carter’s faith and dedication to service. Vice President Kamala Harris and congressional leaders delivered tributes, with House Speaker Mike Johnson emphasizing Carter’s humanitarian achievements: “In the face of illness, President Jimmy Carter brought lifesaving medicine. In the face of conflict, he brokered peace. In the face of discrimination, he reminded us that we are all made in the image of God.”

Carter’s state funeral at Washington National Cathedral on Thursday will feature a eulogy by President Joe Biden. Former presidents, including Trump, are expected to attend. Following the funeral, Carter’s remains will return to Georgia aboard Air Force One for a private service at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains. He will be laid to rest alongside his wife, Rosalynn Carter, near the home they built together.

Jimmy Carter’s life of service and commitment to humanity leaves an enduring legacy of integrity, compassion, and faith.
